A thumping great V8 in the front, drive to the rear wheels, and a great big smiling piece of meat sitting in the middle… The C63 is a car that in my lifetime I feel almost obliged to own after having driven some, old and new!

Under the bonnet lies the legendary 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 (known as the M156), producing 451 hp and 600 Nm of torque in its standard form. In Performance Pack Plus or Edition 507 guise, power was bumped to 481 hp and 507 hp, respectively.

Paired with a 7-speed AMG Speedshift automatic gearbox, the C63 roars from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds (standard model) and tops out at an electronically limited 155 mph. Remove the limiter, and it’s capable of much more. The car’s rear wheel drive setup made it thrilling, and sometimes (more often than not) tail happy, to drive.

This brute wasn’t just about straight line speed. With its stiffer suspension, wider track, and upgraded brakes, it handled brilliantly for a car of its size and weight. The AMG-tuned chassis ensured sharp cornering and high-speed stability, though it was always a little on the wild side—exactly what AMG fans loved.

Strangely enough though, the AMG fell short of the equivalent BMW M3 in the diff department - no LSD?? Definitely a silly decision from Merc - what do you think?

On the subject of silly decisions, do any of you know why the badge on the side says 6.3? Or why Mercedes just refuse to make a proper gearbox for these cars?

The first gen C63 was one of the last AMGs to feature a naturally aspirated engine, making it highly sought after by enthusiasts. Prices in the UK range from £20,000 to £40,000, with rare editions like the Edition 507 commanding higher values.

I’ve driven first and second gen C63s, and can confidently say that both of them are worth every single penny they cost to buy and to run!!
